Science of Sailing Exhibit
Ocean Quest’s Science of Sailing showcases integrate ship models with artifacts and connects them to science concepts and hands-on activities. Areas of focus include the science of simple machines and how they incorporate design, navigation, and communication. Along the way, visitors will be introduced to the unique and historic elements related to the nautical history of the Newport Harbor.
Plus, join one of these three fun and exciting adventures and become a Navigator, an Engineer, or a First Mate!
Engineer Quest– Learn what it takes to build and sail a boat. Test your engineering skills as you learn about the various components of a sail boat, discover how a ship’s design can impact its load, and create and test your own sail.
Navigator Quest– Learn what it takes to be a ship’s navigator as you explore communication at sea. Discover how and why flags are used on ships and practice other ways to communicate while at sea, like Morse Code. Can you find your way only using a Compass?
First Mate Quest– Early learners can experience the Science of Sailing exhibit by exploring sails, learning about flags, and letting a compass guide them on their journey!
To support this effort, Ocean Quest is collaborating with the Newport Beach Historic Society and local yacht clubs, as we all share a love of the harbor and a goal of connecting visitors from near and far to our rich heritage.
